DIY immune-boosting elixir

As the brisk temperature of fall reminds us of summer’s departure, we often feel run-down, and that our immune systems could use some support.

The healthier our immune systems are, the better our bodies can cope with the daily demands of life, including stress and environmental toxins. Not only does the immune system help ward of illness, it encourages proper functioning of every other system of the body.

While there are a few store-bought options you can choose, I’m sharing a simple, cost-effective Balinese immune-boosting elixir called Jamu Juice. This drink’s fresh turmeric, ginger, honey, and lemon provide an all-natural and anti-inflammatory effect that give the immune system the support it needs.

This recipe is as simple as it is effective. I recommend making a big batch on Sundays so that you have it on-hand to drink throughout the week.  You can warm it up like tea for a soothing bedtime drink, or pour it over ice as a post-workout option.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Yield: 8 cups

Ingredients

  • ½  cup fresh turmeric root juice (juice from ¾ cup fresh turmeric root)

  • ½  cup fresh ginger root root juice (juice from ¾ cup fresh ginger root)

  • 6 cups cold filtered water

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 3-4 tablespoons honey (or agave)

  • Squeeze of lemon or lime to taste

Instructions

Slice the turmeric and ginger into thin rounds and juice, using an electric juicer (it’s ok to leave skin on). You should end up with 1 cup liquid combined. Add a little water to the juicer to extract more of the juice if you want. Place this in a 2 quart (8 cup) jar, pitcher or container.

Add the honey to 1 cup warm water and stir to combine well. Add this to the jar. Fill the jar with water (about 6 more cups) and squeeze with lemon or lime to taste. Stir in a teaspoon of coconut oil, or add a shot of the elixir to warm apple cider.

Enjoy!
