Why You Should Start Your New Year's Resolutions Now

Have you thought about your New Years Resolution yet? Okay okay I know we haven’t even got to Christmas yet, but hear me out.

I am a big advocate for healthy goal setting year round, but I also want to propose an option that could make fulfilling your New Year's resolution for 2022 a little bit easier.

What if you started right now?

5 Reasons it Just Makes Sense to Start Your New Years Resolution Early

1. Take the Pressure Off

We put SO much pressure on the start of a new year, thinking it means a whole new us. Committing to new and healthy habits is a beautiful thing, but it’s already hard enough without the added pressure of it being a part of a huge collective movement. Starting early can allow you to begin your change from a place of calmness and clarity without worrying about what anyone else is doing.

2. Stop Procrastinating

“Why put off until tomorrow what you can put off until the day after,” the old adage says. But this is one of the biggest ways we sabotage creating healthy changes in our lives by putting that commitment off into the future. What happens if you don’t start in January? Will your goal get pushed into 2023? If there is a change that you’d like to make in your life, there truly is no better time to start than right now.

3. Beat the Winter Blues

After the holidays, for many of us things get pretty anticlimactic. The promise of all of the holiday joy is behind us and we still have another three months of Winter left ahead of us. This is actually the time of year where many people’s motivation is actually at the lowest, so you can see why so many people get sucked into unhealthy habits instead of moving towards their goals. Starting now can give you a jumping off point to carry you forward after the holiday hullabaloo.

4. Start from a Better Foundation

Let’s be real for a second. The real reason many of us put off our healthy goals into January is to give ourselves a free pass to indulge unchecked over the holidays. While I believe that indulgence and joy are an integral part of a healthy lifestyle and should be factored into any sustainable lifestyle change, starting your resolutions before the holidays can allow you to indulge and play in a more balanced way. This will set you up for better success as you won’t have to undo everything that happened over the holidays as well.

5. Make it Personal

Committing to a healthy goal, change, or shift in your life shouldn’t be about a date on the calendar or the societal expectation to do something for the New Year. This is about you, and your life, and is an incredibly personal undertaking. You’re the one who is going to be putting in the work, and you’re the one who will reap the rewards. Removing resolutions from the New Year really brings them home to what they are truly about.

Whatever your resolution is, and whenever you decide to start, just know that everyday is a new day. Progress is progress, and even if you fall off track, you can make a new self commitment at any time, new year or not.
