Below are some of the benefits and recipes for not only the berry, but their little green crowns as well.
BENEFITS OF STRAWBERRIES
It’s no coincidence that these berries are shaped like hearts. Strawberries are great allies in fighting off inflammation, supporting your heart health, immune system, and are jam-packed with vitamins and antioxidants.
Rich in anti-inflammatory compounds - Supports brain and heart health by assisting in cognitive function and improving circulation in the heart.
Assists with digestive health - Strawberries contain around 3 grams of fiber per cup which helps to support good digestion. A healthy gut means a happier mood, better sleep & stronger immunity.
Rich in vitamins and minerals - An abundance of Vitamin C, Manganese, Folate (vitamin B9) and Potassium are found in Strawberries. These as a team, are supportive for immune function, skin health, tissue growth, cell function & the regulation of blood pressure.
HIDDEN BENEFITS OF STRAWBERRY LEAVES
The benefits don’t stop with the berry. The leaves also contain many benefits, including assistance with inflammatory issues and are great additions to fresh salads, smoothies, teas or garnishes.
Rich in antioxidants - These little leaves have been found to be rich in bioactive compounds, anti-inflammatory agents and antioxidants.
Diuretic effects - Strawberry tea helps stabilize the digestive tract and can help reduce diarrhea.
Defense against microbial pathogens - It’s been suggested that berry leaves in any form, say, like in strawberry leaf tea, promote healthy functioning in the body. Strawberry leaves contain compounds that defend against microbial pathogens.
High in Vitamin C - Not only are the berries rich in vitamin C, but the leaves, as well.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SOURCING ORGANIC
Strawberries are known to be on the list of the ‘Dirty Dozen’ and contain the most pesticides of any fruit or vegetable. This is why it is important to find organic sources. Many local farms are supplying fresh, organic berries as well as some opportunities to pick your own. If you are local to the Victoria area, Dan’s farm is offering ‘U-Pick’ berries on select days.
