Superfood Spotlight: International Chocolate Day- Recipes & Benefits

The Superfood Spotlight is shining on Chocolate this month!

Not only is it a yummy dessert, but this popular superfood has lots to offer in support of good health! Be sure to be mindful of the quality of ingredients and sugar content in your chocolate treats and recipes as that will affect the amount of health benefits.

Let’s take a look at the health benefits of chocolate and some delicious recipes.

BENEFITS OF CHOCOLATE

  1. Reduces Risk of Cardiovascular Disease - Due to the large amounts of stearic acid and antioxidant flavonoids in chocolate, it helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

  2. Improves Memory - Good quality dark chocolate is a rich source of flavanols which help to improve memory and enhance cognitive focus.

  3. Elevates Mood - Phenylethylamine, also known as the ‘love drug’ chemical found in good quality cacao enhances our mood by increasing the release of dopamine in the brain.

  4. Increases Neuroplasticity - In a recent study it was found that eating chocolate that was at least 70% cacao increased certain gamma frequencies in the cerebral cortical region of the brain which is directly linked to memory and sensory processing.

  5. Increased Energy - Cacao contains Theobromine, a naturally occurring stimulant which dilates blood vessels (instead of constricting them) to increase blood flow and give you an energy boost without leaving you feeling jittery.
